News And Politics

Updated in a new 9th Edition, News: The Politics of Illusion, by W. Lance Bennett discusses and analyzes the dramatic shifts in news consumption and creation that have both ended and begun new eras of journalism in our time.   How well does the news, as the core of the national political data system, serve the needs of democracy? In exploring this core question, this book examines both how political actors work their messages into the news and how journalists and news organizations report the news.

Review

News: The Politics of Illusion is a smart, provocative introduction to media and American politics. Bennett argues that the American political data system – with news at it is center – is broken, with severe aftermaths for democracy. Bennett lays out his case, and invites readers to make up their own minds.” – Paul Freedman, The University of Virginia

“This book is written with no problems or difficulties in flowing prose, free from the jargon that obscures to much social science writing. Bennett is critical, but never carping, praising the news system for what he considers it is numerous amount of energy and condemning it for what he perceives as it is shortcomings.” – from Doris Graber’s Foreword

5Learn why the media fails our representative republic!!!!
By Dr. Cardinal
Bennett offers a great insight into the manner in which the media works. The media’s job is to make money for their parent companies. To that end the media needs to keep viewers watching their product. This, however, does not mean that better information will be produced by the media in order to keep people watching their product. Rather, it means they will do what they need to keep viewers regardless of whether this means that will produce better information for their viewers. For instance, they might provide more information about celebrities or entertainment. In this instance, they would be engaging in “infotainment,” rather than informing the public. Bennett says all of this clearly and in a more engaging manner using many real life examples. Get it and see what the media does and why it fails us!!!
